What is hypogonadotropic hypogonadism?
A person with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism does not reach puberty, has small sexual organs, and has infertility. A male with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism has abnormal testicles that do not produce normal levels of the sex hormone, testosterone. A female with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism has abnormal ovaries that do not produce normal levels of sex hormone, estrogen. Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is caused by decreased production of a hormone by the hypothalamus. The hormone, called gonadotropin-releasing hormone, is the first step in a process that stimulates the testicles in males, and the ovaries in females. Most cases of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism are inherited. Images
