What is hyperparathyroidism?
A person with hyperparathyroidism has overactive parathyroid glands, which produce abnormally high levels of parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid hormone regulates calcium, phosphate, and magnesium levels in the body. Increased levels of parathyroid hormone cause the removal of calcium from the bones. This leads to weakness of the bones and abnormally high levels of calcium in the bloodstream. Hyperparathyroidism is 3 times more common in females. Images

What are the symptoms of hyperparathyroidism?
Symptoms of hyperparathyroidism include bone pain, joint pains, constipation, depression, hypertension, increased thirst, increased urination, confusion, muscle weakness, nausea, and a slow pulse.

How does the doctor treat hyperparathyroidism?
The treatment for hyperparathyroidism is surgery to remove the over-active parathyroid tissue. Treatment for hyperparathyroidism may also include calcium supplements, vitamin D, and medications.
