What is hyperemesis gravidarum?
A woman with hyperemesis gravidarum has repeated episodes of vomiting during pregnancy. Hyperemesis gravidarum occurs during the first three months of pregnancy. Vomiting usually peaks between 2 and 12 weeks of pregnancy, and then resolves. The cause of hyperemesis gravidarum is unknown, but it may be related to high levels of pregnancy hormones in the bloodstream.

What are the symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum?
The most prominent symptom of hyperemesis gravidarum is repeated episodes of vomiting. Severe hyperemesis gravidarum may lead to symptoms of dehydration. Additional symptoms of dehydration caused by hyperemesis gravidarum include persistent nausea, dry mouth, fatigue, lightheadedness, decreased urination, rapid pulse, fainting, and weight loss.

Treatment for hyperemesis gravidarum may include the oral fluids, special diet, vitamins, medications to control vomiting, intravenous fluids, and smaller, more frequent meals.
