The evaluation of a humerus fracture begins with a history and physical examination.

Physical findings in someone with a humerus fracture may include:

• Arm bruising
• Arm swelling (unilateral)
• Shoulder swelling
• Deformed shoulder, upper arm or elbow
• Inability to move the arm
• Arm numbness (unilateral)
• Hand numbness (unilateral)
• Arm weakness (unilateral):
• Wrist weakness
• Poor circulation to the fingers:
• Abnormal capillary refill test

Testing is required to make the diagnosis of a humerus fracture.

Tests that may be used to evaluate a humerus fracture include:

• Extremity x-rays
• MRI
• Nuclear bone scan
