What is HPV infection?
A person with a HPV infection has an infection with the human papillomavirus. HPV causes genital warts and causes cervical cancer. Most cases of HPV infection resolve without treatment, but reinfection is common. HPV infection is the most common sexually transmitted disease.
What are the symptoms of HPV infection?
Most people who are infected with HPV never develop symptoms. Symptoms of HPV infection in males may include genital warts, penile itching. Symptoms of HPV infection in females may include genital warts, vaginal itching, vaginal discharge, and irregular menstrual periods.
How does the doctor treat HPV infection?
Treatment for HPV infections includes oral antiviral medications, and cryotherapy, laser therapy, or surgery to remove genital warts.
