A woman with hirsutism has excessive body hair that grows in the same pattern as a male. Most cases are caused by a mild hormone imbalance. Rarely, hirsutism is caused by an underlying illness.

About 8 percent of women in the US have hirsutism. Drug treatment effectively prevents additional hair growth, but does not reduce existing hair.
