A person with hip pain has discomfort in the hip. Hip pain may be caused by injury, inflammation or infection. Common causes include arthritis, hip bursitis, hip synovitis, hip strain, and hip injury. Images

Symptoms depend on the underlying cause for the hip pain. Symptoms that occur with hip pain may include hip swelling, hip bruising, hip stiffness, hip tenderness, and warmth or redness to the skin overlying the hip joint. How does the doctor treat hip pain?
Treatment depends on the underlying cause for the hip pain. Treatment for hip pain may include rest, leg elevation, cold compresses, crutches, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain.
