What is hip bursitis?
A person with hip bursitis has inflammation of the bursa that lies over the hip joint. The hip bursa acts as a lubricating pad between tendons and bone near the hip. The bursa prevents destruction of the tendons as they move over bone. The most common cause of hip bursitis is a fall onto the hip.

What are the symptoms of hip bursitis?
Symptoms of hip bursitis include hip pain that worsens with movement of the hip joint. Additional symptoms of hip bursitis include tenderness around the hip, hip swelling, and warmth to the skin overlying the hip joint.

How does the doctor treat hip bursitis?
Treatment for hip bursitis includes rest, crutches, cold compresses, stretching exercises, physical therapy, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain. Additional treatment may include corticosteroid injections into the hip bursa.
