High Triglycerides Underlying Cause
The most common causes of high triglycerides are a high fat diet and lack of exercise.
Severe cases of high triglycerides may be inherited.
Additional causes of high triglycerides include:
- Alcoholism
- Cirrhosis

- Diabetes

- Hypothyroidism

- Kidney disease

- Obesity
- Pancreatitis

- Pregnancy
- Medications:
- Anti-viral medication
- Beta-blockers

- Birth control pills
- Corticosteroids (Prednisone, Medrol)
- Diuretics
- Estrogen
- Progestin
- Tamoxifen
Triglycerides are a storage form of fat that provide energy for the body. Triglycerides can cause narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the organs. This process is known as atherosclerosis, which is the major cause of heart disease and stroke.
