A person with hidradenitis suppurativa has an infection of the sweat glands in the armpit or groin.

Hidradenitis suppurativa occurs when the sweat gland becomes plugged with skin cells or dirt. Bacteria and sweat build up inside the gland, which results in infection. With treatment, most cases of hidradenitis suppurativa resolve in 10-20 days.
