What is herpangina?
A person with herpangina has a fever, sore throat and ulcers in the mouth, caused by an infection by a virus. Herpangina usually occurs in children between 3 to 10 years old. Symptoms resolve within 1 week without treatment.

Symptoms of herpangina include mouth or tongue ulcers, mouth or tongue pain, lip swelling, lip ulcers, anorexia, swollen glands in the neck, fever, and rash on the feet hands or buttocks.

How does the doctor treat herpangina?
There is no cure for herpangina. The illness resolves without treatment in 5 to 10 days. Treatment for herpangina includes acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain and fever control. Additional treatment for herpangina includes fluids, saltwater gargles, and oral anesthetics.
