A person with hepatitis D has inflammation of the liver from an infection by the hepatitis D virus. Images

Initial symptoms may include:
Hepatitis D is uncommon, and always occurs with hepatitis B. A person can be infected with the hepatitis D virus by exposure to infected blood. Hepatitis D is not spread through food, water or sexual contact. Hepatitis D infection does not change the outcome of a hepatitis B infection.
