Physical findings in someone with worsening hepatitis C may include:

• Jaundice:
• Abnormally yellow skin or eyes
• Bruising of the skin
• Dark urine
• Pale skin from anemia
• Liver enlargement
• Liver tenderness

Physical findings in someone with severe hepatitis C may include:

• Blood in the stools
• Blood in the vomit
• Confusion
• Lethargy:
• A condition of excessive sleepiness or drowsiness.
• Dehydration

Testing is required to make the diagnosis of hepatitis C.

Tests that may be used to evaluate hepatitis B include:

• Liver profile:
• May show elevated liver enzymes and bilirubin
• Complete blood count
• Hepatitis panel:
• Determines the type of viral hepatitis
• Coagulation profile:
• Hepatitis can disturb blood clotting

Imaging tests that may be used to evaluate hepatitis C include:

• Ultrasound of the abdomen
• CT scanning of the abdomen
• MRI scan of the abdomen

Less commonly performed tests:

• Laparoscopy:
• Also useful for obtaining a biopsy specimen from the liver
• Liver biopsy
