A person with hemorrhoids has painful, swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus. Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure in the anal veins. Images

Hemorrhoids can cause pain, bleeding and itching when they become swollen and push through the anal opening, or when a clot forms inside the hemorrhoid. About 40 percent of adults suffer from hemorrhoids.
