Common names:
  • Hemoglobin C Disease
A person with hemoglobin C disease has abnormal hemoglobin inside the red blood cells. Images

Hemoglobin is the molecule inside red blood cells that carries oxygen in the bloodstream. The presence of hemoglobin C causes the red blood cells to be deformed, and the spleen removes the deformed red blood cells from the bloodstream. This results in a lower number of red blood cells in the bloodstream, called anemia.
