What is heel bursitis?
A person with heel bursitis has inflammation of the bursa that lies over the heel bone. A bursa is a small sac of fluid that is filled with very slippery fluid. A bursa lies between a tendon and bone. It acts as lubricating pad, reducing the friction between the tendon and the bone. Heel bursitis is usually caused by overuse of the foot, or repeated stress on the heel. Images

What are the symptoms of heel bursitis?
Symptoms of heel bursitis include heel pain, and pain at the end of the Achilles tendon that worsens with walking. Additional symptoms of heel bursitis include heel swelling, heel redness, and tenderness over the heel and Achilles tendon.

How does the doctor treat heel bursitis?
Treatment for heel bursitis includes cushioned heel pads, orthotics, supportive footwear, and cold compresses. Additional treatment may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and crutches. Surgery may be helpful in those who also have a heel spur.
