Most hand and finger injuries cause some degree of pain and swelling. Skin injuries may cause obvious cuts, abrasions and bruising.

Symptoms of minor hand injury include:

• Mild hand pain:
• Slightly worse with movement
• Hand pain rapidly improves
• Mild hand swelling (unilateral)
• Mild hand bruise

Symptoms of severe hand injury include:

• Severe hand pain
• Severe finger pain
• Worsening hand swelling (unilateral)
• Worsening hand bruise
• Laceration to the hand or finger
• Puncture wound to the hand or finger
• Deformed fingernail
• Deformed hand
• Deformed finger
• Inability to move the hand or fingers normally
• Severe tenderness over the hand bones
• Worsening hand pain
• Worsening finger pain
