Guillain-Barre Syndrome Underlying Cause
Guillain-Barre syndrome is caused by a malfunction of the immune system, which fights infection. The immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves that branch off the spinal cord. Images

This leaves the nerves unable to correctly transmit information to, and from, the brain. The cause of the immune system malfunction is unknown. Guillain-Barre syndrome tends to occur after a stressful event, such as an infection or surgery.
