What to expect with Guillain-Barre syndrome:
- About 85 percent of patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome make a complete neurologic recovery.
- Severity may range from mild difficulty walking with recovery within weeks, to complete paralysis with incomplete recovery after 18 months.
- The peak weakness is usually seen in 10 to 14 days.
- About 3 to 4 percent of those with Guillain-Barre syndrome die from the disease.
- About 30 percent of adults have weakness after 3 years.
- Children have higher rates of chronic problems following Guillain-Barre.
- About 10 percent of those who recover from Guillain-Barre, relapse.
