Guillain-Barre Syndrome Outlook
What to expect with Guillain-Barre syndrome:
  • About 85 percent of patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome make a complete neurologic recovery.
  • Severity may range from mild difficulty walking with recovery within weeks, to complete paralysis with incomplete recovery after 18 months.
  • The peak weakness is usually seen in 10 to 14 days.
  • About 3 to 4 percent of those with Guillain-Barre syndrome die from the disease.
  • About 30 percent of adults have weakness after 3 years.
  • Children have higher rates of chronic problems following Guillain-Barre.
  • About 10 percent of those who recover from Guillain-Barre, relapse.
