Gout is caused by elevated levels of uric acid in the bloodstream. Uric acid is a waste product that is normally removed by the kidneys. When uric acid levels are high, uric acid enters the joints, where it forms crystals. The crystals cause inflammation of the joint lining, which results in joint swelling and pain. The cause of increased levels of uric acid is unknown.
