A person with Goodpasture's syndrome has an autoimmune disease. For some reason, the immune system, which normally fights infection, mistakenly attacks the cells in the kidneys and the lungs. Goodpasture's syndrome occurs most often in young men, and can rapidly destroy the kidneys.

Symptoms of Goodpasture's syndrome include dry skin, bloody cough, shortness of breath, decreased urination, pale skin, leg swelling, arm swelling, and facial swelling.

How does the doctor treat Goodpasture's syndrome?
Treatment for Goodpasture's syndrome may include oral corticosteroids, plasmapheresis, immunosuppressive medications, kidney diet, and antihypertensive medications. Some may require kidney dialysis for renal failure. Kidney transplant may be an option for some patients.
