Another name for Gluten Disease is Celiac Sprue.
What is celiac sprue?
A person with celiac sprue is unable to breakdown foods that contain gluten. In those who have celiac sprue, the lining of the small intestine reacts abnormally to the gluten, which causes the intestine to become inflamed and swollen. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, oats, barley, and other grains. Celiac sprue is most common in children and young adults.
What are the symptoms of celiac sprue?
Symptoms of celiac sprue in infants and children may include abdominal swelling, abnormal stools, diarrhea, fussiness in infants, loss of appetite, slow growth, and weight loss.
How does the doctor treat celiac sprue?
Treatment for celiac sprue may include medications to control symptoms, vitamin supplements, and a gluten free diet.
