The treatment for vaginal pain depends on the cause. However, many medication may be used to relieve the pain.
Treatment for vaginal pain may include:
- Lidocaine ointment
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain:
- Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin, NeoProfen)
- Ketoprofen (Actron, Orudis, Oruvail)
- Naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, Aleve)
- Narcotic pain medication:
- For moderate to severe pain
- For short term use only
- Additional oral medications for vulvodynia:
- Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
- Gabapentin
- Tricyclic antidepressant medications
- Surgery:
- May be appropriate for some women who do not respond to medications.
