A person with flank tenderness has pain when pressure is applied on one side of the back, below the ribcage and above the pelvis. Causes of flank tenderness include back muscle strain, bruised rib, fractured rib, kidney infection, kidney stone, and gall bladder disease.

What are the symptoms of flank tenderness?
Symptoms that occur with flank tenderness include flank pain, abdominal pain, back pain, difficulty urinating, pain during urination, fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and red or pink urine.
