Fingertip Infection Viral Underlying Cause
Herpetic whitlow is caused by a herpes virus. The virus usually infects the skin through an opening in the skin on the fingertip. In children, the infection is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1, which causes herpes gingivostomatitis. In adults, the infection is caused by herpes simplex virus type 2, which causes genital herpes.
