Finger Sprains Underlying Cause
Each finger contains three bones. At each joint, the bones are held together by ligaments, which maintain the alignment of the bones. When an injury places stress on a joint, the ligament may stretch or tear. Participation in sports is the most common cause of finger sprain.

Additional causes of finger sprain include:
  • Altercations
  • Falls
  • Industrial accidents
