What is fibrous dysplasia?
A child with fibrous dysplasia has abnormal bone growth that results in weakened bones. The weak bones are prone to fracture. Fibrous dysplasia occurs in children who are between 3 and 15 years old. Fibrous dysplasia usually affects only one bone, rather than the entire skeleton. The cause of fibrous dysplasia is attributed to a gene mutation that results in the formation of abnormal bone.
