A person with factor 5 deficiency has a rare, hereditary blood clotting disorder that can result in severe bleeding. Normal blood coagulation requires the complex interaction of about 20 proteins, called clotting factors. Low levels of factor 5 result in prolonged blood clotting.

Symptoms of factor 5 deficiency include bleeding into the joints, joint swelling, joint pain, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, and easy bruising. Women may experience heavy menstrual periods.

There is no cure for factor 5 deficiency. Treatment for factor 2 deficiency may include, fresh frozen plasma and vitamin K. Patients should avoid aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, and other medications that can promote bleeding.
