Home treatment for eye irritation includes:
  • Wash out your eyes several times per day.
    • Use saline eye wash.
  • Clean your eyelashes gently with a warm wet compress.
  • Apply cold compresses:
    • Apply for 20-30 minutes, every 1-2 hours, for the first few days.
  • Avoid exposure to smoke.
  • Avoid rubbing the eyes.
  • Avoid using eye makeup.
  • Do not use contact lenses until your symptoms are gone.
  • Take an antihistamine for itching:
  • Try nonprescription allergic eyedrops:
Home treatment for exposure to an irritating chemical includes:
  • Clean the chemical off of the face.
  • Eye irrigation:
    • Flush the eye with water or eyewash for 5-10 minutes.
  • Try artificial tears to lubricate the eye.
Removal of an eyelash in the eye:
  • Gently pull the lower eyelids away from the eye one at a time.
  • Use saline eye irrigation solution from a dropper bottle to wash out the eyelash.
