Eye Injury Home Care
Initial home care for eye injuries may include:
  • Perform wound care as directed by your doctor.
  • Clean the skin gently:
    • Use mild soap and water.
    • Do not scrub the skin.
    • Dry the skin.
    • Apply an antibiotic ointment.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes.
  • Wash your hands before touching the injured eye.
  • For glass fragments around the eye:
    • Bend over with the eyes closed.
    • Blow on the closed eyelids.
    • Scotch tape may remove small fragments from the outer eyelid.
  • Try to remove the foreign body from your eye:
    • Gently rinse the eye with tap water or eyewash.
    • Place your face in a bowl of water and then open and close eyes under water.
    • If you have dirt under the upper lid, pull the upper lid out and draw it over the lower lid.
  • Remove contact lenses.
  • Take prescribed medications as directed.
