Exudative Macular Degeneration Types

The two types of macular degeneration include:

  • Dry macular degeneration (age-related or non-exudative)
  • Wet macular degeneration (exudative)

Dry Macular Degeneration
  • Most common type
  • Caused by aging and thinning of the tissues of the macula
  • Loss of vision is gradual.
  • Major cause of blindness in Americans over 65 years of age

Wet Macular Degeneration
  • Caused by abnormal blood vessels in the back of the eye
  • Less common but more severe than dry macular degeneration
  • Accounts for fewer than 10% of all cases of macular degeneration
  • Causes vision loss and blindness
