The evaluation of extraintestinal amebiasis begins with a history and physical examination.

The physical exam is usually normal.

Physical findings in someone with extraintestinal amebiasis may include:

• Fever
• Signs of dehydration
• Jaundice

Signs of dehydration include:

• Pale, dry skin
• Dry eyes and mouth
• Sunken eyes
• Sunken fontanelle in infants
• Rapid pulse
• Low blood pressure when standing
• Confusion
• Lethargy:
• A condition of excessive sleepiness or drowsiness.

Tests that may be used to evaluate extraintestinal amebiasis include:

• Stool cultures can usually detect this parasite.
• Serologic testing for amebiasis is often positive.
• Liver profile
• Complete blood count
• Kidney profile
• Ultrasound of the abdomen:
• May detect liver abscess
• CT scanning of the abdomen:
• May detect liver abscess
• Liver biopsy:
• A guided biopsy of a liver abscess is usually necessary confirm the diagnosis.
