What is esophageal cancer?
A person with esophageal cancer has abnormal cells in the esophagus that multiply out of control. These cells can form tumors and spread to other parts of the body. Esophageal cancer can be very difficult to treat. By the time it is detected, it has usually spread to other parts of the body. Risk factors for esophageal cancer include heavy alcohol use, smoking, and a condition called Barrett's esophagus. The cause of esophageal cancer is unknown, but genetics may play a role in determining risk. Images
