A person with erysipelas has a serious skin infection caused by bacteria. Erysipelas is a type of cellulitis that occurs most commonly on the face or neck. Erysipelas can spread rapidly. Common symptoms include redness, swelling and pain. With early treatment, most cases resolve within 10 days. Those who are at greatest risk for erysipelas include the elderly and those with a poorly functioning immune system.

Symptoms of erysipelas include skin redness, skin tenderness, skin swelling, and skin blisters. Other symptoms include headache, fever, joint pains, muscle aches, fatigue, and nausea.

Treatment for erysipelas may include warm wet compresses, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain.
