What is epididymitis?
A man with epididymitis has inflammation of the epididymis, usually caused by a bacterial infection. Epididymitis can spread from the urethra, to the prostate gland or the bladder. Epididymitis is most common in 19 to 35 year old men. Some of the same bacteria that are transmitted sexually, such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, can also cause epididymitis.

What are the symptoms of epididymitis?
Symptoms of epididymitis include scrotal swelling, scrotal pain, pain during urination, penile discharge, and cloudy or bloody urine. Fever and chills may develop in more severe infections.

How does the doctor treat epididymitis?
Treatment for epididymitis includes rest, cold compresses, antibiotics, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain.
