What is an enlarged prostate?
A male with an enlarged prostate gland or benign prostatic hypertrophy has a condition that is normally seen in males over 60 years of age. An enlarged prostate gland occurs when the cells that make up the prostate continue to grow and multiply, over time. Having an enlarged prostate gland does not mean that you are at increased risk for prostate cancer. An enlarged prostate becomes a problem when it grows to the point that it interferes with normal urination. Images

What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate?
Most men have an enlarged prostate gland for years before it causes urinary symptoms. Initial symptoms of enlarged prostate include difficulty starting urine stream, straining to urinate, weak urine flow, sudden urge to urinate, difficulty stopping urine flow, and increased urination at nighttime.

How does the doctor treat an enlarged prostate?
The treatment for an enlarged prostate includes medications to improve urination and surgery for enlarged prostate gland. Images
