A male with an enlarged prostate gland or benign prostatic hypertrophy has a condition that is normally seen in males over 60 years of age. Images

Benign prostatic hypertrophy occurs when the cells that make up the prostate continue to grow and multiply, over time. Having an enlarged prostate gland does not mean that you are at increased risk for prostate cancer.

An enlarged prostate becomes a problem when it grows to the point that it interferes with normal urination.
