In most cases, encopresis is caused by long-standing constipation. Over time, the anal opening becomes stretched by large, firm pieces of stool that remain stuck in the rectum. The child becomes unable to sense the urge to have a bowel movement and soft stool leaks around the large pieces of hardened stool.
