Most people with encephalitis are initially treated in the hospital. Those with mild symptoms may be managed at home.

Home care for encephalitis may include:

• Rest
• Drink plenty of liquids to avoid dehydration
• Take prescribed medications as directed.
• Acetaminophen for pain
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain
• Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil)
• Naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, Aleve)
• Ketoprofen (Orudis)
