What is elbow bursitis?
A person with elbow bursitis has inflammation of the bursa near the elbow joint. The inflammation may be caused by injury, overuse or infection. A bursa is a small sac that is filled with very slippery fluid. The bursa acts as a lubricating pad between a tendon and bone. Treatment for elbow bursitis may include rest, cold compresses, elevation, and elastic wrapping. Other measures include physical therapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain. Oral corticosteroids or injectable corticosteroids may be used in more serious cases.
