A person with ehrlichiosis has an infection of the white blood cells caused by the bacteria, Ehrlichia chaffeensis. These bacteria are spread through the bite of an infected tick. Several types of Ehrlichia bacteria infect humans and cause ehrlichiosis. With treatment, most people with ehrlichiosis recover completely from the infection.
