Ear Tenderness Overview

What is ear tenderness?
A person with ear tenderness has pain when pressure is applied to the ear. Ear tenderness may be caused by an injury, inflammation, or infection. The most common cause of ear tenderness is an infection of the outer ear canal, called otitis externa. Additional causes of ear tenderness include an ear injury, ear foreign body, cerumen impaction, and ear cellulitis.

What are the symptoms of ear tenderness?
Symptoms that occur with ear tenderness include ear pain, ear swelling, ear redness, hearing loss, ear discharge, headache, and fever.

How does the doctor treat ear tenderness?
Treatment for ear tenderness depends on the underlying cause. Treatment may include, cold or warm compresses, oral antibiotics, antibiotic ear drops, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain.
