The evaluation of dysfunctional bleeding begins with a medical history and physical examination.

Physical findings in a woman with dysfunctional uterine bleeding may include:

• An enlarged uterus
• An enlarged ovary
• Cervical tenderness
• Signs of anemia:
• Pallor
• Rapid heart rate
• Rapid breathing
• Abnormally low blood pressure upon standing (orthostatic hypotension)

Testing is often required to investigate the cause of recurrent vaginal bleeding.

Tests that may be used to evaluate dysfunctional uterine bleeding include:

• Daily body temperature to check for time of ovulation:
• Temperature is slightly elevated with ovulation
• Pelvic ultrasound:
• Looks for abnormal ovaries and tumors
• Serum pregnancy test
• Serum progesterone level
• Serum estrogen level
• PAP smear
• Urinalysis
• Thyroid profile
• Complete blood count
• Coagulation profile

Less commonly used tests that may be used to evaluate dysfunctional uterine bleeding include:

• CT scanning of the pelvis
• Laparoscopy
