Drug Side Effect Underlying Cause
Medications are designed to target specific processes in the body, so that the medication only treats the cause of an illness or infection. However, medications may affect other processes in the body at the same time, which can cause side effects. The challenge lies in designing drugs that only affect one process, in order to reduce the risk for side effects.

Side effects tend to increase as the dose of the medication is increased.
