A person with diabetic neuropathy has damage to the nerves that provide sensation to the extremities, as well as other nerves throughout the body.

Diabetic neuropathy usually affects the nerves in the feet and legs. The most common symptoms include numbness and burning pain on the surface of the skin. The loss of sensation makes the feet and legs more susceptible to injury.
