A person with diabetic ketoacidosis has a life-threatening chemical imbalance in the bloodstream, caused by type 1 diabetes.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is due to a lack of insulin, which results in high glucose levels and high acid levels in the bloodstream, as well as severe dehydration.

Diabetic ketoacidosis occurs in about 1 out of 2000 people with type 1 diabetes.

Symptoms may include:

• Increased urination
• Excessive thirst
• Weakness or fatigue
• Rapid breathing
• Rapid pulse
• Abdominal pain
• Vomiting
