The evaluation of dermatitis begins with a medical history and physical examination.

Physical findings in those with dermatitis may include:

• Skin redness
• Skin scaling
• Skin peeling and crusting
• Rash
• Raised skin lesions that appear blister-like or ooze are also not uncommon.
• Raised skin lesions with irregular borders (hives)

The diagnosis of dermatitis may be confirmed through testing.

Tests that may be used to evaluate dermatitis include:

• Skin biopsy
