The diagnosis of dental caries is made upon examination of the teeth. Usually, tests are not necessary. However, tests may be done to determine the severity of the tooth decay. ![]()
Tests that may be used to evaluate dental caries include:
- Dental x-rays

- Needle aspiration may be needed to detect a questionable dental abscess.
