A person with Dengue fever has a viral infection that is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. Most Dengue infections cause flu-like symptoms that resolve over 7 days. However, in some cases the infection causes inflammation of small blood vessels, which can result in serious bleeding. Dengue fever is most dangerous in children, who are at the highest risk of developing severe illness.

Initial symptoms of Dengue fever include fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pains, rash, nausea, and vomiting. Symptoms of worsening Dengue fever include bleeding gums, nosebleeds, bloody urine, and a rash that looks like broken blood vessels under the skin.

Treatment for Dengue fever includes rest, plenty of fluids, and acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain and fever control. Treatment for severe Dengue fever may include intravenous fluids and antiviral medications.
