A person with a pilonidal cyst has fluid-filled sac under the skin in the upper part of the buttock crease. If left untreated it may become infected and form a pilonidal abscess.
What are the symptoms of a pilonidal cyst?
Symptoms of a pilonidal cyst may include a swollen lump under the skin between the buttocks. The lump may become painful or tender.
How does the doctor treat a pilonidal cyst?
Treatment for a pilonidal cyst may include warm baths, narcotic pain medications, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, and antibiotics. Surgery may be required to remove the cyst and prevent future infection.
