The exact cause for Crohn's disease is unknown. Crohn's disease causes inflammation and irritation of the entire gastrointestinal tract.

A number of factors may play a role in the cause of Crohn's disease:

  • Immune system:
    • Cells that fight infection may mistakenly attack the lining of the intestine.
